Transforming urban spaces into pollinator habitats

  • Who we are

We’re a father/son team who sees a bare patch of grass and thinks, “That would make a great home for some purple coneflower, little bluestem, and a few monarch butterflies.”

We plant prairie because we love it, and because we believe it can change the world.

  • What we do

We work with homeowners to transform unused yard and boulevard spaces into climate change-fighting, pollinator habitats teeming with color, native plants, and animal life.

Creating a pollinator garden means removing non-native grass, planting evenly spaced prairie plants, and tucking them in with a nice blanket of weed-suppressing mulch.

  • Why we do it

Pollinators face extinction, climate change is worsening, and homeowners can do something about it.

Even a small patch of prairie sequesters carbon, reduces runoff, and provides habitat for at-risk pollinators.

    Plus, no mowing required.

Why choose prairie over grass?

Would you rather have a space that requires constant watering and mowing or a habitat that’s bursting with life, pulling in carbon, building soil, soaking up runoff, and constantly putting on a show?

That’s what you choose between when you consider traditional lawn versus native prairie.

Unlike shallow-rooted lawn grass, the roots of native prairie plants extend as far as twenty feet, pulling carbon out of the air where it causes climate change and locking it away in the soil where it sustains life.

Other than the first year, prairie requires no watering. And you’ll never need to mow it, making prairie the low-maintenance choice for busy homeowners.

Why work with City Prairie?

As plant nerds and prairie enthusiasts, we embrace the words of Willa Cather, who wrote, “Anybody can love the mountains, but it takes a soul to love the prairie.”

In other words, we love prairie. And we want to help you fall in love with it too.

With years of researching, planting, and observing prairie, we know what it takes to create thriving pollinator gardens and habitats in urban settings.

If you’re looking for experts to transform your underutilized lawn and boulevard spaces into places that sustain life and fight climate change, then look no further. We’d love to help.
